The future of MGS

When systems fail, community shows up. Madison neighbors showed what's possible when neighbors care for neighbors, and we’re deeply grateful.

As we transition MGS to its next chapter, we’ll stop accepting new offers of help on December 7 and finalize matches shortly after.

About Madison Grocery Share

Madison Grocery Share was created in a crisis in October 2025 when neighbors lost their SNAP (FoodShare) benefits during the government shutdown. With SNAP benefits restored and demand for help still present, the program has outpaced what a volunteer group can sustain. We have documented the model and are looking for a nonprofit home to carry this forward. Interested in learning more or taking over MGS? Contact us.

We started MGS with a simple idea: sometimes folks need a little extra help, and sometimes others have a little extra to give. By matching neighbors directly, we aimed to make it easy to share grocery support in a personal, flexible, and dignified way.

This project was volunteer-run and community-driven. It was not a replacement for local food pantries or public benefits – just one more way to strengthen the web of care that already existed in Madison. Every bit counts, and every connection matters.

We believe that everyone deserves food and that mutual aid can bring out the best in a community. Whether you’re giving help, getting help, or spreading the word, we're glad you're here.

We're not a formal organization. Just some neighbors who think people should have food to eat.

This group complements, not replaces, the incredible work of local food pantries.

We were built on community feedback and collaboration. Have ideas to make it better? Email us!
